10 Tahun sebelum Merdeka

Federation of Malaya

Sexy school uniforms?

26 05 2008

HI, PKPIM suggesting the revamp on high school female student uniform saying that it is too sexy and leads to premarital sex and rape.

How you look at it? Is important for student movement to be look at things from equality perspective, not only on civil and political rights perspective.

Few question to think about:

1. Does sexy uniform cause sexual assault?

2. Is it the fault of the victim or the perpetrator when sexual assaults happen?

3. What is the solution/measure can be taken for rape and pre-marital sex among high school students? But of course in the fist place, we need to ask do we accept pre-marital sex?

4. What is your stand for school uniforms? Need to revamp?

True democracy cannot mature with ISA around

14 05 2008

From Ashvin Raj (Malaysiakini)

I read with much scepticism of Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Zaid Ibrahim’s recent statement that he finds the Internal Security Act (ISA) and Official Secrets Act (OSA) unacceptable. He was quoted as saying that he is against any unjust and harsh laws which and this includes the ISA and OSA.

MCPX

However, this was contradicted by the Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar who said that such laws will not be abolished, as they are needed for the purpose of maintaining public order. In such a scenario between two conflicting statements, what would be the public stand of the prime minister?

Would he seek to abolish such oppressive laws in the newly-convened Parliament in agreement with his own minister in his department? Or would he seek not to, in the interest of the home minister’s recent remarks?

I would certainly not be surprised if Pak Lah remains defiant in not wanting to abolish the ISA and OSA, as it has served to protect BN’s interests for the past 51 years after Merdeka. After all, he was the one who authorised the detention of the Hindraf activists and accused them on baseless grounds of being a threat to national security.

The opposition and the vast majority of the general public have long seen the ISA to be a notoriously oppressive law. In the name of national security, the ISA has been used as a convenient political tool that allows for indefinite detention without trial. The ISA is an obnoxious piece of legislation that has no place in a democracy.

Former detainees have published horrifying accounts of their detention under the ISA when they have been subjected to solitary confinement without access to family members, lawyers and friends. Police interrogators have routinely subjected ISA detainees to physical and mental torture in order to ‘turn them over’.

All this amounts to human rights abuse and a barbaric treatment of individuals who have never been tried, let alone convicted, in an open court. These acts of injustices are an obscene affront to human dignity and a mockery of democracy. They violate the teachings of all religions in our nation, because it has demeaned human life.

The ISA is an unjust law, where its so-called legal practices represent a crime against humanity. As always, the ‘threat to national security’ has been a flimsy catch-all excuse for not charging and trying so-called suspects in open courts.

How do you expect the continued existence of the ISA to foster a reformed democratic society when this oppressive law looms as an ever-present threat over the lives and liberty of ordinary Malaysian citizens? True democracy cannot mature when people are being threatened with detention without trial.

The basic principle of natural justice is that the accused must be given the right to be heard must be unconditionally upheld. I therefore sincerely hope that Zaid Ibrahim and Pakatan Rakyat will pressure the federal government in Parliament to immediately charge and try all ISA detainees in an open court or release all ISA detainees still incarcerated.

Otherwise, there will not be any true judicial reform as pledged by the prime minister - through the appointment of Zaid Ibrahim to be in charge of legal affairs - and it will only remain a mere rhetoric.

Don’t rely on defections, Pakatan - Malaysiakini

Lim Mah Hui

There has been a great deal of rumour and buzz about defections from Barisan Nasional (BN) politicians to the opposition camp.

All it takes are 30-plus defectors and the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) will form the new federal government, ostensibly led by PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim.

Is this a welcome sign and move? Read the rest of this entry »

What Is Our Demand To New State Government

25 03 2008

Dear members and friends,

In the 12th general election, Malaysian voiced out their dissatisfaction to Barisan National. Opposition party successfully denied 2/3 of BN in Parliament, and became the State government in Selangor, Perak, Kedah and Pulau Pinang. The biggest success achieved is the mind-changing of Malaysian that not only BN can become government in Malaysia.

However, now what is our demand to new state government? DEMA as a student and youth organisation, we must also voice out our request to new state government in order to move forward our agenda such as abolish of UUCA that suppress student awareness, PTPTN issue and maybe graduate fail to get job. Besides that, there are many things that we can do.

What is your suggestion to WHAT SHOULD DEMA DO and OUR REQUEST TO STATE GOVERNMENT ? Hope that you can share you opinion here.

TOGETHER WE CAN CREATE A BETTER TOMORROW

Best regards,
Ng Yong Jin
Secretary of National Affair

MANILA, Philippines — By some weird twist of fate, I met Mr. Jun Lozada and his prayer warriors. And I never felt more ashamed about being a youth in this country. Our meeting was accidental. My thesis partner and I had gone to the Senate on the first day of the hearing for a purpose that had nothing to do with the ZTE national broadband network deal. We wanted to interview a reporter for our thesis who was covering the hearing. When we got there, we learned that the media had been divided into three groups to meet with Lozada after his testimony. Before our interview with the reporter began, his group’s turn came.

PMN positif atau negatif?

30 01 2008

Below is an opinion about Parti Mahasiswa Negara(PMN) from Azrul Azreef bin Baharun (DEMA member at Kolej Tuanku Jaafar). Hope you all also can express your opinion about PMN here.

Parti Mahasiswa Negara

Read the rest of this entry »

Police new strategy - preemptive arrest

28 01 2008

Below is a sharing from Kuang Keng (Malaysiakini journalist and DEMA senior) about police arrest in PROTES assembly.

—————————————————————————————

Dear frens, I’m very much disturbed about what the police did yesterday (26 Jan, Sat). I witnessed police arrest ppl 1 hour b4 they organised peaceful demonstration.

Closer to election, police have become more oppressive.

I was there, of course many of those arrested are opp leaders, but there are also ordinary ppl that were arrested. I saw one guy who took photo of SB (Special branch, secret police) was arrested after he was discovered by police officers.

I overheard police officers talking to themselves, “tangkap sahaja”.

I saw police beating ppl when arresting. Quoted from my colleague story :

Orders by Zulkarnain for the activists to sit down where they were standing were ignored. Instead, the latter crossed the road towards Avenue K, at which point Zulkarnain barked orders for their arrests.

“Drag them back (to this side) into the trucks! They were rough against us, be rough against them!” he was heard telling the police officers.

>From the scores of PSM supporters and leaders who were arrested included Selvam. Several of the other activists were seen being kicked and struck as they were taken by force by police officers.

When we asked the OCPD why police beat ppl, u know what he said to us?

“You saw how I told them to sit down and not to proceed. They acted rough, so we were (only) equally rough,” he said.

This is words from gangsters, not police!

Meanwhile my colleague was also arrested, my god! a journalist arrested! He’s now still in Pudu jail detention center. All he did is asking the police why they arrest other ppl.

This is too much.

These are some of the stories in Englisha and Chinese. Further update will be available as the event goes. Pls visit www.malaysiakini. com for latest news. Read the rest of this entry »
